Selvaragan says no space for yuvan

Kollywood music world is shocked to hear the news that ace director Selvaraghavan has replaced his inhouse favourite Asthana music director Yuvan Shankar Raja with G.V Prakash for his under production Aayirathil Oruvan! Yuvan had already composed and Selva had picturised one song for the film which is said to be a rocking number.

In Tamil cinema, the music director plays an important role in the making of a hit film. The chemistry between a director and music director has to be perfect for good tunes to evolve. There has to be great vibes and a tuning between them to produce hit music. Just think of A.R Rahman without Mani Ratnam or Shankar, Harris Jayaraj sans Gautham Menon? Similarly Selva and Yuvan was a fine pair who had terrific understanding and has dished out chartbusters.

So what went wrong between the two buddies? The grapevine has it that it is over money that they split. Selva was not willing to pay the current market rate of Yuvan rumoured to be Rs 1 Crore to do the music and re-recording for a film. Yuvan feels that over “friendship” Selva was taking him for a ride and had not even paid his salary for the directors home production Yaaradi Nee Mohini.

Selva too has his grouses against Yuvan who has never delivered music on time, delaying his films. In case of Aayirathil Oruvan, it has been almost 6 months since the shoot of the film started and Yuvan has been able to give just one song! Anyway the relationship between them has soured and it looks like another “famous friendship” in Kollywood has come to an end.

G.V. Prakash who is riding a wave has been making rapid strides in the last few months since his Kireedom, Pollathavan and now Vellithira albums have became huge hits. Let us hope Prakash is able to tune in with Selvaraghavan and deliver a hit with Aayirathil Oruvan, the directors most ambitious project.

A mad race is on between Kollywood director P Vasu and Bollywood director Priyadarsan over who will first complete their versions of Katha Parayumbol in Tamil and Hindi respectively. P Vasu and Priyan are not known to be the best of friends. Last year, P Vasu sent a legal notice to Priyadarsan, claiming the director was trying to copy his Chandramukhi scene-by-scene into Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiya! Priyan hit back saying that his film is based on the Malayalam original Manichitrathazhu, which was ripped off as Aaptamitra in Kannada, and remade in Tamil by Vasu as Chandramukhi! Anyway, Priyan's Bhool Bhulaiya turned out to be a blockbuster hit and he had the last laugh. When writer, actor and producer Sreenivasan showed Priyadarsan, his close buddy, the first cut of Katha Parayumbol even before it released in Kerala, the director's first reaction was: "I will remake it in Hindi with Shah Rukh Khan playing the superstar's role, done by Mammootty." After the film became a hit in Kerala, P Vasu wanted to remake it with Rajinikanth as Kuselan and held a show for him. The superstar agreed to do it and now the battle between Vasu and Priyan is over which version will turn out to be a bigger hit. Both the directors have reworked the original to suit their respective market conditions. Now Vasu and Priyan are saying the role of the "superstar character in the film" has been expanded and they will have more screen space to include an additional "two songs and two fights".
